Who We Are

Keeping Families Close

Family sitting on couch.

Imagine learning that your child is ill and you will need to travel to a different city to receive the medical care they need. In the midst of your worst nightmare as a parent, you must now also leave your home, your job and your support system. This is the reality for more than 70 per cent of Canadian families with seriously ill or injured children.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Atlantic is here to help. We keep families with sick children together and near the medical care they need through our Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room programs.

Ronald McDonald House is a “home-away-from-home” for out of town families with sick children receiving vital medical treatment in Halifax. Our warm, welcoming and affordable accommodations help ease the heavy financial and emotional burdens placed on the hundreds of families who come through our doors each year.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms provide an oasis of calm and support inside the hospital allowing families to relax, refresh and recharge just steps away from their child receiving medical treatment. We are proud to operate two Family Rooms; one at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax and a second at the Moncton Hospital.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Atlantic is a non-profit organization. We depend upon charitable donations and volunteer support from many individuals, corporations and foundations to fulfill our mission. We receive no government funding.

Our History

Since opening our doors in Halifax in May 1982, Ronald McDonald House Charities Atlantic has helped more than 25,000 families that have stayed with us when they had to travel to Halifax for medical treatment. Our House is one of 15 Houses across Canada and one of more than 360 around the world.

In 2007, we opened the first Ronald McDonald Family Room in Canada at the IWK Health Centre and in 2011 we opened a second Family Room at the Moncton Hospital. Today, there are 16 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in hospitals across the country, with more expected to open due to an unprecedented demand from hospitals, and a growing focus on family-centred care.

Our Impact

  • In 2019, we supported 2,048 families through our Ronald McDonald House & Family Rooms
